Junior Dos Santos Downs Fabricio Werdum For A Second Time
Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos improved to 2-0 all-time vs. Fabricio Werdum. This win also moved dos Santos into a future heavyweight title fight under Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred banner.
Dos Santos and Werdum served as the main event from the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida Friday night.
After opening a cut on Werdum early in the fight, dos Santos continued to apply pressure. In the third, he nearly forced Werdum’s eye shut with constant punches.
“I’m feeling awesome tonight,” Dos Santos said. “I feel like it was an amazing fight.
“This was my first time fighting bare knuckle and I loved it. It was amazing. I feel good. My hands are feeling a little sore, but that’s okay. I’m fighting someone that everyone knows was really well prepared.
“Everybody knows the legend that he is and I should avoid that ground game. You guys want me to go to the ground with that guy? No way! It’s jabs, crosses and hooks.”
Dos Santos will take on the winner between Alan Belcher and Roy Nelson for the heavyweight title. Those two square off on Saturday, October 28 from Mississippi.
In the co-main event, Joel Bauman scored a stoppage victory over Maki Pitolo while Joshua Weems downed Irwin Rivera in another fight.
Ago Huski, Anthony Njokuani, Joey Ruquet, Jhonasky Sojo, Reggie Northrup, Shahzaib Rind and Juan Alvarez were also winners.
