Back at UFC 250 in 2020, Amanda Nunes made history. The reigning UFC women’s featherweight and bantamweight champion successfully defended her featherweight strap in the main event over Felicia Spencer.
UFC 250: On This Day
The UFC looked much different than ever before back in 2020. The promotion was still working around the COVID pandemic, but had made it back to Las Vegas to hold events.
UFC 250 was one of those, as Amanda Nunes made history. The UFC female bantamweight and featherweight champion at the time, Nunes defended her featherweight title over Felicia Spencer in the main event on June 6.
The event was originally scheduled for April and in Sao Paulo, Brazil. However, the Ginasio do Ibirapuera was used as a field hospital instead.
With the change in location, several fights and fighters were removed including Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.
Amanda Nunes Made History
Back in 2018, Nunes earned the UFC featherweight title with a first round knockout of Cris Cyborg. As the current bantamweight champion, she would dominate both divisions, defending the titles over the next couple of years.
The encounter with Spencer marked her first featherweight title defense after besting both Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie at bantamweight.
Spencer was no slouch, as the former Invicta FC champion pushed Nunes to the distance, going all five rounds and 25 minutes with her. It marked just her second career loss.
Nunes would defend the featherweight title once more over Megan Anderson the following year before losing the bantamweight belt to Julianna Pena. She has since reclaimed that title and defends it this weekend at UFC 289.
Future Opponents With Victories
The main card featured a pair of wins by future opponents in Aljamain Sterling and Sean O’Malley. Sterling, the current UFC bantamweight champion, submitter Cory Sandhagen with a first round rear-naked choke.
O’Malley, who will challenge Sterling for the belt, opened the main card with a knockout of Eddie Wineland.
In the other main card fights, Cody Garbrandt finished Raphael Assuncao and Neil Magny bested Anthony Rocco Martin.
Four Finishes On The Prelims
The prelims for the event featured four finishes, including three in the first round. Herbert Evans opened the night with a submission of Evan Dunham, locking in a rear-naked choke.
Alex Perez stopped Jussier Formiga and Ian Heinisch downed Gerald Meerschaert.
Other winners included Alex Caceres, Cody Stamman and Devin Clark.
