On Friday afternoon, WWE Chief Creative Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque unveiled their plans to decide the new WWE world heavyweight champion.

Fans have been clamoring to get it for nearly a year, but in April the top promotion in professional wrestling revealed the introduction of the WWE world heavyweight champion. The new belt, which looks like a mix of the old WCW world heavyweight title and the current top WWE titles, is in response to the lack of a high-level championship on the Raw brand.

Long reigning WWE champion Roman Reigns unified that belt and the WWE Universal title at Wrestlemania 38 and has held a death grip on both belts for over a yea. And continued his dominant reign (pun intended) with a surprise win over Cody Rhodes at this year’s Wrestlemania last month.

With him being an exclusive talent for Smackdown Live still after last week’s WWE Draft, the new belt will give Raw a top title for main event stars to compete to win for the first time in over a year. However, it had yet to be revealed how the new champ will be decided. That is until today.

During a press conference in Puerto Rico to hype Saturday’s Backlash event, Levesque revealed the plans that will help bring a new WWE world heavyweight champion to Raw.

”Starting after Backlash this Monday night on Raw, we will begin a world heavyweight championship tournament,” Levesque said. “It will be across both brands. On Monday, there will be two triple-threat matches with the winners facing each other later that night to determine a winner for Monday Night Raw.

“Friday on SmackDown, the same thing will happen,” he continued. “Two triple-threat matches will take place. Those winners will face each other at the end of SmackDown to determine a winner there. Those two winners from Raw and SmackDown will then go on to Night of Champions where one of them will be crowned the new world heavyweight champion.”

It has not been announced who will be participating in the matches to be the new WWE world heavyweight champion, but Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre, Finn Balor, AJ Styles, and Bobby Lashley are likely to be involved. WWE Night of Champions happens on May 27 in Saudi Arabia.
