Wrestling Dream Match Set For UFC On ESPN Saturday Night

Wrestling fans will get a treat on the UFC on ESPN prelims Saturday.

The event features Calvin Kattar meeting Josh Emmett in a featherweight fight live on ESPN and ESPN+. The card takes place from the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, as Joe Lauzon and Donald Cerrone are also scheduled.

On the large prelims, though, will be a fan wrestling followers will be heavily interested in.

Phil Hawes and Deron Winn are signed for a middleweight affair. The bout is second on the current fight card and sure to bring in the eyes.

Hawes, a 33-year-old from New Jersey, was a junior college national champion at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. That is the same program that produced Jon Jones, Joe Soto, Cain Velasquez, Colby Covington and so many more.

He appeared on The Ultimate Fighter 23, but lost to Andrew Sanchez via decision. He signed with the World Series of Fighting and Bellator before joining the UFC in 2020.

Hawes had two appearances on Dana White’s Contender Series. He is 11-3 overall and 7-1 in his last eight fights.

Winn won two junior college title at St. Louis College-Meramec, earning outstanding wrestler honors. He later attended Lindenwood University and was an All-American.

Following a failed bid at making the Summer Olympic team in 2016, he embarked on MMA. Winn is 7-2 with a recent victory over Antonio Arroyo in 2020.

Other prelims include Adrian Yanez battling Tony Kelley and Court McGee meeting Jeremiah Wells. Also, Ricardo Rams, Eddie Wineland and Cody Stamman are in action.
