UFC 240: Felicia Spencer Continues to Sound Confident, Despite Being Underdog For Cris “Cyborg” Bout

If you look at the betting lines for UFC 240, it’s immediately clear that the vast majority of folks believe Cris “Cyborg” will defeat Felicia Spencer. But, that doesn’t mean the undefeated featherweight and former Invicta champ doesn’t like her chances of handing the star a second, consecutive loss.

Spencer has been tapped to fight the UFC’s former 145 champ, after submitting former Invicta champ Megan Anderson in May. With that win, the 28-year-old Spencer moved her pro-record to 7-0.

Well, after that victory, Spencer said it would be an honor to face “Cyborg””, and the two are going to battle on Saturday. The bout will mark the first time “Cyborg” has competed, since she was quickly taken out by Amanda Nunes in October. That loss was the Brazilian legend’s first in MMA competition, in almost 15 years.

As UFC 240 nears, “Cyborg” is a huge favorite on the betting lines, with some odds makers having her at a -980. But, while talking about whether she feels intimidated about facing one of the all-time greats, Spencer recently said this (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“There’s no intimidation factor,” Spencer said. “She’s just anther person standing in front of me, and no one is unbeatable.”

“I feel like I’m a pretty decent pressure fighter, myself,” Spencer said while breaking down the match-up. “Obviously I haven’t fought anyone with the name of Cyborg. I definitely feel like my strength and my ground game will beat her. Everyone is beatable.”

Sure, most fighters always note that anyone is beatable, and that they have what it takes to defeat their opponent when they’re the underdog. But, Spencer is in an interesting place of her career. She’s never been defeated, and she’s coming off an impressive, submission win over another top ranked featherweight in Anderson. So, it’s not surprising to hear she’s confident heading into Saturday’s contest. Despite the consensus narrative her opponent will very likely win.

If Spencer can beat “Cyborg”, however, then her profile will grow immensely and a bout with Nunes will almost certainly be next. If “Cyborg” wins things will become far less certain. Will she resign with the UFC and rematch Nunes? Hard to say.

UFC 240 will take place in Edmonton, Alberta.
