I Don’t Know If Frankie Edgar Can Win Tonight, But I Still Love Him

I have a confession to make: Ever since Frankie Edgar had his first fight ever in the underground fight promotion I used to cover, I’ve been an Edgar stan. However, when he faces Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 240, I’m not entirely sure Edgar can win.

Don’t get me wrong. I was thrilled when the wrestler from New Jersey dethroned the then-great BJ Penn, winning the lightweight belt. And I was thrilled when he put away Gray Maynard. But his forced venture into the featherweight realm never seemed to put a championship belt in his grasp, despite it coming within reach, and now Edgar is older and–dare I say it–a step slower. Remember what happened against Brian Ortega last year?

Remember what champ Holloway did to Ortega?

There’s no question that Edgar deserves this shot at Holloway. In fact, they were supposed to fight about 200 times already (the Edgar/Ortega fight happened because Holloway had to drop out). So I have no problem with Edgar facing the Hawaiian tonight.

It’s just that… if he’s lost a step, and his vaunted chin is finally showing some cracks, how can Edgar pull it off? I still love Edgar, but I have my doubts.

And I of course hope he proves me wrong.
