Khabib Nurmagomedov: Winner of Max Holloway vs. Dustin Poirier is Next

Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier are going to throw down for an interim lightweight title right around the corner, and Khabib Nurmagomedov says he’ll indeed, fight the winner….

Holloway and Poirier will battle at UFC 236, April 13th, and since it’s for an interim belt, you would ordinarily expect the winner to fight for the undisputed title. But, as any big fan knows, these are not ordinary times in the lightweight division, what, with the likes of Tony Ferguson and Conor McGregor.

But, while speaking to RT Sports recently, Khabib had this to say about his next bout:

“[Holloway and Poirier] are fighting for the interim belt, and the champion has to face the interim champion. Tony Ferguson can’t fight at the moment, (Georges) St-Pierre is retired, McGregor is retired, a boxing match with Mayweather is not happening as we couldn’t come to an agreement with UFC. Holloway and Poirier are great fighters, I will fight the winner of this bout.”

Note Khabib’s comment about McGregor being “retired”, but, even if that changes, it would be kind of surprising if the “Notorious” one moved past either Holloway or Poirier for a title shot. After all, since Khabib submitted McGregor last October, he’s said several times the former champ doesn’t deserve an immediate rematch.

And who would Nurmagomedov rather fight? Holloway or Poirier?

“Holloway has a 13-fight winning streak, if he beats Poirier it will be 14 wins in a row, which is the longest active winning streak in the UFC, if he wins he will also be a two weight champion. Fans would also be more interested in a Holloway fight.”

Ya. No offense to Mr. Poirier, but it’s hard to argue with the galaxy class grappler here.
