UFC Argentina: Who’s Watching What?

The UFC’s busy schedule continues to roll on, as the promotion’s in Buenos Aries, Argentina, for its latest Fight Night card. So, will the Neil Magny – Santiago Ponzinibbio led card draw a fair sized audience? Considering all the events that have been going on?

The Prelims

Not surprisingly, the UFC has enlisted the services of a lot of South American fighters for the prelim bouts. While MMA observers here in North America are well accustomed to watching fighters from the region, there are not too many names, if any really, who will likely pop for mainstream fans.

The most recognizable name likely is veteran welterweight Michel Prazeres, who will battle Bartosz Fabinski. After all, Prazeres has been competing in the UFC now since 2013, and he’s riding a seven-fight winning streak. That said, how many folks out there realized the Brazilian has won 7 straight to push his record to 25-2? So, ya. “Trator” has been flying under the radar a bit, no question.

In what could be one of the final flyweight bouts we see in the UFC, rising 125’er Alexandre Pantoja will face Ulka Sasaki, in a fight that hardcore fans probably have their eye on.

The Main Card

The main card has a similar theme, in that it will feature three fighters from Brazil (Cezar Ferreira, Poliana Botelho and Johnny Walker), two from Argentina (Ponzinibbio and Guido Cannetti) and one from Ecuador (Marlon Vera). But, none of those fighters except from Ferreira and Ponzinibbio are probably familiar to casual fans.

The co-main event will see former featherweight challenger Ricardo Lamas throw down with the ridiculously rugged, Darren Elkins, in a fight that almost certainly won’t be boring.

The Magny – Ponzinibbio fight is an intriguing one, no question, and both men have been competing in the UFC for some time now. But, neither are mainstream commodities or household names.

So, how will UFC Argentina do here in North America? Ratings-wise?

Well, on paper, it certainly doesn’t appear to be a line-up that will generate big numbers, even if there are some promising bouts booked. But, I didn’t expect UFC Denver to draw all that well, and the main event between Chan Sung Jung and Yair Rodriguez reportedly pulled 840,000 viewers. Those are the best numbers for a Fight Night card since May. The card also featured fan favorite Donald Cerrone take on Mike Perry.

But, if UFC Buenos Argentina generates numbers close to those, the UFC brass will likely be jumping for joy.

Here is the line-up for tonight’s card.
