WWE Announces Mae Young Classic

Triple H has announced the offical name and date for this Summer’s Women’s Tournament

The Mae Young Classic

Mae Young was considered a pioneer for women’s wrestling, holding various titles for decades and wrestling well into her 70s and 80s.

PWI has reported that WWE’s Women’s Tournament now has an official time and date. Tapings will take place Saturday and Sunday, July 13th and 14th. The finals will be a live special on Tuesday, August 29th.

This is great news! WWE has grown their Women’s Division so much in the last few years, and it is great to see it is just beginning. The format is similar to the Cruiserweight Tournament. Perhaps like that, it will lead to a 205 Live-esque show featuring women.

WWE is planning on holding a Women’s Tournament over the summer in the same vein as the Cruiserweight Classic and the UK Championship tournament.

Triple H made the official announcement on Twitter during Wrestlemania Weekend:

There are a lot of ladies in NXT who will be involved, but here are a few unsigned talents from around the world who would make great additions to the tournament.

Viper

From Scotland, powerful and agile, she’s a good contrast to the typical lady wrestler type. She’s done a lot of with Insane Championship Wrestling, arguably the biggest promotion in the United Kingdom and long-rumored to be in a deal with the WWE for content sharing. Seeing her go up against some smaller ladies would be a fun change of pace.

Nixon Newell

She’s wrestled for WhatCulture and Attack! Pro Wrestling in the UK. Spent time in Japan and famous for her “Shinest Wizard” finisher. Nixon has the type of bubbly personality that reminds me a lot of Bayley, but more PG-13.

Candace LeRae

If you ask most wrestling fans, they’ll probably tell you that she’s the best lady on the scene. She made her name wrestling guys at PWG and has the style and charisma to go toe-to-toe with anyone, including her husband, NXT star Johnny Gargano. Unlike a lot of women, she works a “lucha” style that is heavy on ‘ranas, kicks, and dives.

Mia Yim

Formerly TNA’s Jade, she’s an indie staple who hits hard and also has experience wrestling with the boys and around the world. Her mother is from South Korea, so she would be able to represent a country not traditionally thought of when it comes to wrestling.

Leva Bates (aka Blue Pants)

This one is a bit of a cheat because she already was in NXT. But after being sidelined with an injury, she’s back. Beyond the “Blue Pants” she’s famous for cosplaying for matches. In fact, her “Blue Pants” gear is a cosplay from X-Men and the video game Fallout.

Io Shirai

The best female wrestler from Japan. She reminds a lot of people of the All Japan Women of the 80s and 90s. She just signed with WWE. She’s already got experience against NXT forever Women’s Champ Asuka

Toni Storm

Aussie-born bombshell who made her name in the UK and Japan. She’s gone up against the world’s best and wrestled at Axxess this past Wrestlemania weekend.

LuFisto

Like Tyson Dux and Brian Kendrick got a shot in the Cruiserweight tournament, LuFisto is a long-time indie staple who would be a good “final chance” storyline in the tournament. She’s even wrestled a few death matches. It can’t all be young up-and-comers. She is French-Canadian.
