Brian Stann Makes Case For Why Demetrious Johnson is “The Best to Ever do It”

Following Demetrious Johnson’s dominant win at UFC on FOX 24 on Saturday, UFC commentator and retired fighter Brian Stann is making the case for why the flyweight champ is the best fighter of all time.

Johnson took on Wilson Reis on Saturday night, and after kicking his striking game into high gear, proceeded to take the latter down and finish him with a third round, armbar. The bout marked the tenth time Johnson has defended the flyweight title, and if “Mighty Mouse” does so again, he’ll move past Anderson Silva and set a new record for title defenses.

Since Saturday, Stann was a guest on the Anik and Florian podcast, and here is some of what he had to say about Johnson (quote via MMA Fighting):

In my eyes, the best ever was Georges St-Pierre before DJ and I just thought GSP’s total dominance, his ability to take the fight and dictate where it goes, takedown defense, offense, the ability to end a fight striking and on the ground — I thought he was the best ever,” he said. “But when you add up everything, [him] being so fluent lefty, righty, angles, hard to hit, beautiful offense, power — he was doing legitimate damage to Wilson Reis during this fight — mixing in punches, kicks, excellent boxing, kickboxing, wrestling ability from both sides, passing the guard consistently, having an answer for every single position, being good off his back, having excellent submissions. To me, this fight solidified the fact that he’s the best to ever do it.

Stann also noted that while Anderson Silva is a “brilliant striker”, with some submission skills, he doesn’t possess the wrestling and top game that Johnson does. In terms of Jon Jones, who is also right there in the greatest of all time discussion, Stann argued that “consistency” and “failing different tests” matters. So, if “Bones” comes back, reclaims the 205 title and puts together a big run, he could retake the top spot.
