One of my favorite matches on the Summerslam card is undoubtedly the match between Samoa Joe and AJ Styles. With the title on the line, this could be the match of the night. Here are our predictions!
First, let me say that AJ Styles is one of my favorite superstars on the roster, so I’m certainly supporting him for Summerslam. That being said, Samoa Joe cannot be underestimated, especially with his trusty Kokina Clutch on his side.
Even though I’m a big AJ Styles fan, it may be a good idea for the WWE to give the title to Joe. The man had so many good bookings on Raw, but he was never given a clear title shot due to the whole Roman Reigns/Brock Lesnar experiment. Being moved to SmackDown, one would assume Joe will get the chance to shine once again.
I can picture Samoa Joe with the title and that is a good thing. He would be a good champion and the man shoots a promo unlike any other. Still, it does leave me wondering what will be next for AJ, but I’m sure the WWE will have a plan for him in place.
So, who will win at Summerslam? I think Samoa Joe will dethrone AJ Styles. One part of me wants to see Joe do it as well, so whatever happens, I won’t be disappointed. I expect a stellar match from these two, so whoever wins is alright by me.
If you told me six years ago that this match would happen, I would say you’re crazy. Neither one of these guys was even on WWE’s radar. Now, the two biggest non-WWE stars in the last decade and a half are fighting over the WWE Title at SummerSlam. While it won’t be the main event, it will be a marquee match-up giving plenty of time. I’m glad WWE hasn’t treated this as a “dream match” and is putting a real wrestling angle behind it. I think AJ wins but the feud continues.
All good things must come to an end, and, unfortunately, I think AJ Styles’ phenomenal reign as WWE Champion will come to an end at SummerSlam.
To be perfectly honest, I thought Styles would retain up until I saw the go-home episode of SmackDown. WWE is finally giving Samoa Joe a decent storyline that doesn’t feel cobbled together just to give him something to do, and he’s ready to carry a world title in WWE. Likewise, it’s time for Styles current time with the title to end while he’s still ahead.
AJ Styles is arguably my favorite wrestler active today. But Samoa Joe isn’t far behind him.
I’ve been a huge fan of both these guys for over a decade-and-a-half. As I wrote last month when this match was first announced:
The first time I ever heard of AJ Styles or Samoa Joe was in TNA, and after enjoying their work on that brand, I couldn’t help but wonder back then why two guys so talented weren’t working on top in the WWE.
Come SummerSlam; they will be. The main event world title match. They deserve it. So does every fan who ever followed them, ten years ago or ten minutes ago. AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe could be the match of the night at WWE’s second biggest PPV of the year.
Expect them to have a top contender for match of the night Sunday, if not the top match.
That said, it’s time for Joe to become WWE Champion. Fans want it and he deserves it. After that, These two could chase each other for the title for the next year, and I would be entirely happy.
