The return of Vince McMahon to SmackDown Live was one of the highest anticipated events in recent history. Unfortunately, things would take a dark turn for the chairman of the board!
Confrontation with Kevin Owens
When I heard about Vince McMahon’s appearance on SmackDown Live, I was certainly excited, but I did expect some tension. Let’s face it: the situation could go either way. Vince could be supporting Owens, in his true heel style as chairman of the board, or Vince could come out to defend his family. During SmackDown Live, it became clear that Vince was coming out to defend his family.
Things would take a terrible turn for the chairman of the board though, because Vince gave Owens permission to “beat a McMahon senseless.” The result was Vince being headbutted by the former “New Face of America.”
Not a Title Match, But…
Even though the feud between Kevin Owens and the McMahon family has nothing to do with a title, there are many things to be excited about.
I have to admit, when I heard about the WWE’s plans for creating a feud between Owens and Shane McMahon, I was quite upset they pulled Owens from his rivalry with AJ Styles. However, the feud with the McMahon family has proven to be a lot more interesting than I thought it would be.
Over the years, I have been feeling a lack of care when it comes to WWE storylines; this is the first time in a long time that I actually give two hoots about a match and who wins. So, Kevin Owens beating up 72-year-old Vince was a genius move from the creative department.
Could the Feud Restore Ailing SmackDown Live Brand?
It is no secret that the blue brand has been suffering as of late, mainly due to a lack of storylines for the women’s roster, the painfully long reign of Jinder Mahal, and WWE’s focus on conquering the Indian and Asian market, leaving their existing fan base in the cold.
From a large number of empty seats for SmackDown Live events to dwindling viewership ratings, the blue brand has seen it all over the past couple months. However, I do believe that a rivalry of epic proportions could restore the brand! Therefore, a rivalry between the McMahon family and Kevin Owens could be just the remedy the brand needs.
As I stated before, there are more problems the WWE needs to address, especially their focus on one portion of the wrestling market and forgetting about their loyal American and European fans. Still, if the WWE tackles these problems during the storyline between Owens and the McMahon family, SmackDown Live might be restored to its former glory.
